Everest Gokyo Lake Trekking

nepal gokyo lake trekking

The trek to Gokyo provides an excellent opportunity to see an eyeful view of the Mt. Everest at close range. This trek is to be considered as an alternative trek to the traditional Everest Base Camp trek that offers magnificent view of the mountain peaks and the Ngozumpa Glacier- the largest in the Nepal Himalayas.

The image of this region is associated with the soaring view of the most popular mountains view of Nepal like Mt. Cho-Oyo (8153m), Mt. Everest (8848m), Mt. Lhotse (8501m), Makalu (8463m) etc. which are clearly visible from Gokyo Ri (5483m.) above Gokyo Lake. One of the most remarkable features of the trek is the view of tremendous ice ridge between Cho Oyu and Gyachung (2922m) located in Khumbu region.

This extraordinary trek is also worthy in a sense that it offers an ample opportunity to explore the amazing destination and its impressive sight, which is beyond human imagination.
Grade: Medium
Maximum Elevation: 5420m/5545m
Season: September to mid December/ Mid February to May
Duration: 13 Days

 » Itinerary Details:

Day 01 Kathmandu/ Lukla, trek to Phakding [2656m]
After an early breakfast at the Hotel, we are transferred to the Domestic Airport to connect flight to Lukla, which is the starting point of our trek. From the airstrip of Lukla we move towards north, passing through the lodges, airline offices and shops, dropping steeply for a while then descending to Chablung. Crossing the stream at Chablung the trail heads north, descending steeply to Tharo Kosi and then we climb a bit beyond the Tharo Kosi bridge and reach to Ghat at 2590m. From there, crossing a ridge, climbing a bit above the river we reach to our destination marked for the day, Phakding. Overnight stay at the Local Lodge at Phakding.

Day 02 Phakding to Namche [3420m]
From Phakding, following the Dudh Koshi valley north and staying 100m above the river on its west bank move to Zamphuti. We climb steeply over a rocky ridge and connect high above the river to Benkar. We then climb to Chomoa and then to Monjo, crossing Kyashar Khola. Beyond Monjo, we enter to the Sagarmatha National Park. From this point the trail makes a steep rocky descent to a large farm and then turn left to cross the Dudh Koshi, following the west bank. After making a short distance from the river we reach to Jorsale. Crossing and re-crossing the river, we finally make our way to Namche, at an elevation of 3420m. Overnight stay at the local lodge at Namche.

Day 03 Acclimatisation day in Namche

A day rest is very important at this point before proceeding higher and further with our Trek. This Acclimatisation day provides us with an enormous opportunity to explore the famous Namche Bazzar. We can hike to Thami, visit the villages of Khunde also can visit the Namche Gompa. Overnight stay at the local lodge at Namche.

Day 04 Namche Bazar To Phortse Thanga (3680m)

After rest at Namche we are prepared physically and mentally to proceed further with our trek. To begin with the trek from Namche we climb the hill to Khumjung and then descend to the east of the village down the broad Valley leading to the Dudh Koshi. The Gokyo route turns north, climbing above the more frequented route to Tengboche and Everest base camp. The two trails soon join and continue towards a large chorten on the ridge top at 3973m. This ridge descends from Khumbila. Again from Mong the trail descends in steep switchbacks down a sandy slope to the Dudh Koshi. The trail to Everest drops down the hill but we turn off here and climb to cross the Mon La before reaching Phortse Thanga. There are good camping site at Phortse Thanga. Overnight stay at Phortse Thanga.

Day 05 Phortse Thanga To Dole [4090m]

After breakfast at our camping site we advance for the next destination. The trail climbs steeply out of the valley through rhododendron forests from Phortse Thanga. The route passing through a herders’ hut at Tongba climbs gently to Dole (4090m). Overnight stay at Dole.

Day 06 Dole To Machermo [4410m]

The trail becomes steep as we climb through Gyele on to Lhabarma at 4330m. We then walk on the banks of the large stream of Luza at 4340m from here the trail continues to climb along the side of the valley, high above the river, crossing sandy spurs to Machermo at 4410m. Night stay at Machhermo.

Day 07 Rest Day In Machermo

This will be our second and the last acclimatization day for the whole of our Trek. We can spend this day exploring the surrounding places of Machermo or just relaxing at the camp.

Day 08 Machermo To Gokyo [4750m]

Fresh we begin with our trek for the day. At the beginning we move to Pangka from there, drop slightly to a large cave area known as Nilibuk. We climb a steep rocky incline into the valley by the side of the glacier, passing the first of the holy lakes. We soon arrive at the second of the lakes, crossing the path which heads across the glacier to Cho La - our route to Lobuche and Everest, later in the trek. The third lake is known as Dudh Pokhari and on its eastern shore is the settlement of Gokyo. Walking by the side of the lake, the scenery is magnificent with the summits of Cho Oyu and Gyachung Kang reflected in its emerald green waters. Overnight stay at Gokyo.

Day 09 Rest Day – Ascent Of Gokyo Ri [5483m]

We take one more day rest at Gokyo. This rest day provides us the chance to ascend to Gokyo Ri. The views around Gokyo are tremendous, for the best view, we climb Gokyo Ri, the small peak above the lake. It is a two-hour climb to the top of the peak, providing a panoramic view of Cho Oyu, Gyachung Kang, Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cholatse and Tawachee.

Day 10 Trek back To Phortse [4690m]

Without spending a night at Thare or Konar we descend to Phortse in a single long day. Instead of retracing the upward route, we follow the eastern side of the valley to gain different views of Khumbila. The route to Phortse retraces the upward journey to Pangka, then turns east and climbs across the terminal moraine of the Ngozumpa Glacier to Na. The trail makes a few ups & downs and enters to Phortse.

Day 11 Phortse To Namche Bazar

Within 4- 5 hours we reach to Namche from Phortse. The trail descends to Phunki Thanga and then ascends to the ridge towards Namche Bazzar. On arrival to Namche Bazzar, we get an opportunity to buy fake Tibetan Jewellery. We are moreover towards the end of our trek to Gokyo. We make an overnight stay at the local lodge at Namche.

Day 12 Namche to Lukla [2800m]

For the last day of our trek we descend 950m and ascend 250m in total, which might take us of nearly 7 hours to complete. The trail descending from Jorsale at Dudh Koshi reaches at Monjo and from there to Lukla, both the beginning and ending point of our trek. We make an overnight stay at Lukla.

Day 13 Fly to Kathmandu

After an early breakfast at the accommodated lodge at Lukla, we are transferred to the domestic airport to connect flight to Kathmandu. After arrival at Kathmandu, transferred to the Hotel. Rest and overnight stay at the Hotel.
